Did you know?

Pope Clement XI

At the end of October 1669 Pope Clement IX (Giulio Rospigliosi ) fell ill after receiving news that the Venetian fortress of Candia, in Crete, had surrendered to the Turks. He died, allegedly of broken heart, in the December of that year. A kindly old man who was regarded as the People's Pope due to his excessive genorisity and humble personality his death was a huge blow to the people of Rome, literary circles and the Barberini Theatre were he often performed. He was buried at his own behest under the pavement directly in front of the Antico Palazzo Rospigliosi. His successor Pope Clement X decreed that this was no fit burial place for a Pope so his body was exhumed and buried in the Church of St. Mary Major - a monument by Rainaldi marks his tomb.
